It’s not often I squeal at a photo right after taking it. Audibly react, sure. But squeal? That shows that the image is something special.
That happened twice on this shoot. Both times, I squealed and said “THAT is going in the portfolio.” My couple laughed and felt honored to know that I felt that way about photos of them.
Just a few weeks earlier, we connected about getting their engagement session done, since we’d already booked their wedding in the fall using my Deluxe package, which comes with a complimentary engagement session. They shared their vision: they were looking for something edgy, taken at night in DC; different from my usual style of dreamy sunlight and film-inspired lighting and coloring. They wanted it to be full of romantic and steamy candid scenes, using streetlights and the occasional flash as our primary light sources. I excitedly took them up on their inquiry, even though they told me they’d totally understand if I wanted to do something that felt more familiar. I love experimenting, though, and I absolutely adore how the photos turned out.
We met right outside of the Gallery Place-Chinatown metro station in DC and I instantly was captivated by the flashing lights of a nearby police car, stationed at the street corner. I knew immediately that this would be a gorgeous and inspiration-filled shoot, even if it was a bit atypical for me — the busy streets and neon lights of Chinatown in DC proved to be the perfect backdrop for exactly the kind of edgy engagement photos they had envisioned. Scroll down to see how my favorite photos came out - I think we created something really special!
